Tribute to Poor Kids Toys

Sadie and I were talking recently about how both her family and mine have come a long way financially. Granted, when we were kids neither of our families were what I could honestly call “poor,” but there also was never much extra money around to spend on extravagances. Since that time both of our families have been greatly blessed and have a bit more on hand to be able to afford some niceties. But it wasn’t always that way, and as kids we often had to use our imaginations to make up for what the dollar lacked.

Case in point, my siblings and I had a game we would play in the dirt out in our backyard. We called it “Fish-Whacking.” I’m not exactly sure how we came up with that for a name--no actual fish were involved.

Instead, picture an empty, plastic, gallon milk jug (cap still on because it lasts longer that way). This milk jug was tied to a half-dead (eventually all-dead) apricot tree limb using whatever frayed shred of rope we could find. We then took it in turns to beat the milk jug with a stick until there was nothing left to beat on.

Fish-Whacking.

We generally could get a few day’s worth of Whacking out of the milk jug before it withered away into a gnarled mess and wasn’t worth beating on anymore. But boy did we pride ourselves on hard-hits and perfect technique! If we could smack the milk jug into a long arc and then smack it again on its way back down into the same trajectory as before, we were well on our way to becoming Fish-Whacking pros.

So, here’s to fresh milk jugs, stray sticks, and a little imagination. We were never bored if there was Fish-Whacking afoot.

20 Weeks!

Yea! I am now officially 20 weeks along and half way through the pregnancy. I still feel great and just love feeling the baby move around. Tyson got to feel the baby move last week, but he/she has since not kicked hard enough for him to feel it again. We have an appointment next Friday for the level two ultrasound. We're keeping our fingers crossed that the little booger lets us sneak a peek at the goods this time!

Also, I am very excited because the end of the school year is near! My last day as a first grade teacher is June 2nd. After that, I am officially a stay-at-home mom to be!

Does this mean I'm getting old?

Got an excited call from my youngest brother (by about 11 years) yesterday who just purchased his first car. As you can see, the Chrysler 300 he bought is just a step or two above the Datsun that was my own first car.

That isn't me in this picture, but it is the only photo I could find to show off my own "sweet ride" from when I was his age. (The haircut from this guy speaks volumes about the car itself, though!)
Hmmm... Can you tell which one belonged to the dirt poor Airman and which one belongs to the professional entertainer?
Congratulations Skip!

Quick Commercial

This morning's breakfast was brought to us by:

Thanks for the giant mugs, Dad!

Puppy Love

Our lab, Moose, just loves and adores Tyson. Moose follows him everywhere and gets so excited whenever Tyson takes him somewhere or plays with him. A couple of nights ago, Tyson stretched out on the floor and Moose had himself a nice little snuggle. So cute!

18 Weeks

There is no denying that baby bump now! I've started wearing maternity clothes most of the time now, even though the pants are all still a bit big (much more comfortable though!). I've noticed that my coworkers now look at my belly as they ask me how I'm doing. And I have been doing really well. I feel wonderful, and I have to say that I am really enjoying pregnancy. All the changes are quite fun! The baby moves a lot now, though we still can't feel them on the outside. Soon, I hope! I feel bad for Tyson every time I get excited at a movement, since he can't experience that with me.

I am at a weird hair stage right now. I know that doesn't really seem to have anything to do with pregnancy, but it does! Right around the time I got pregnant, I cut my hair in to a shorter bob. However, being pregnant has made my hair grow like crazy, and I couldn't keep up with my new shorter cut. So, I've thrown in the towel for now and I'm just letting it grow out. I just hate those in between stages! Anyway, that part of my post was for the understanding women...sorry to the few guys who read our blog!
